I - INTRODUCTION Momordica cochinchinensis Spreng Cucurbitaceae is ubiquitously distributed in Vietnam. It has been used as a traditional medicine to treat rheumatism 1 . In 1935 from M. cochinchinensis roots was isolated oleanolic acid glycoside named momordin 2 after 3 . Later 1985 Okabe et al 4 have determined that at least there were three saponins momordins I II and III. The authors 5 have carefully studied the root saponins. In seeds were established the a-spinasterol 6 the momordic acid 1-oxo-3p-hydroxy-oleanolic acid 7 . Okabe et al 3 isolated and characterized two saponins from seeds these were momordica saponins I and II. This paper describes the isolation and structural characterizations of 1 - 4 from the root of Vietnamese M. cochinchinensis and their antibacterial activities. II - MATERIALS AND METHODS 1.
