Polyethylene-starch blend polymer has already found to be a potential candidate to replace non-degradable plastic in packaging [7]. However, the degradation of that polymer in natural ambience (soil burial test) needs to be further evaluated. The purpose of this study is to investigate the degradability of PE-starch blend polymer in soil and in liquid medium. The soil is added starch degrading bacteria isolated from natural soil. The film is composed of depolymerized tapioca starch and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) grafted with maleic anhydride, using benzoyl peroxide as initiator. The changes in the number of microorganisms, mechanical properties, weight losses, and SEM photographs were investigated. | Journal of Chemistry Vol. 43 5 P. 628 - 632 2005 BIODEGRADABILITy OF POLyETHyLENE-STARCH BLEND POLyMER IN SOIL Part 2 Received 29 September 2004 DO TRUONG THIEN1 II TRAN THI Y NHI1 TONG KIM THUAN2 institute of Chemistry Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology institute of Biotechnology Vietnamese Academy of Science and Technology SUMMARY Polyethylene-starch blend polymer has already found to be a potential candidate to replace non-de gradable plastic in packaging 7 . However the degradation of that polymer in natural ambience soil burial test needs to be further evaluated. The purpose of this study is to investigate the degradability of PE-starch blend polymer in soil and in liquid medium. The soil is added starch degrading bacteria isolated from natural soil. The film is composed of depolymerized tapioca starch and linear low density polyethylene LLDPE grafted with maleic anhydride using benzoyl peroxide as initiator. The changes in the number of microorganisms mechanical properties weight losses and SEM photographs were investigated. I - INTRODUCTION Low-molecular-weight plastic additives like plasticizers and filler are usually susceptible to microbial attack. This leads to physical embitterment of polymer leaving a porous and mechanically weakened polymer 3 . The microbes in turn release nonspecific oxidative enzymes that could attack the synthesis polymer lead to increase surface area by erosion and pitting. This will accelerate the degradation of the synthetic polymer by diffusion of O2 moisture and enzyme into the porous polymer matrix 4 . In fact this work intended to evaluate the degradability of polyethylene-starch blend polymer in liquid medium and in soil II - EXPERIMENTAL 1. Materials The film called PEMT used in this study 628 was composed of depolymerized tapioca starch and linear low-density polyethylene grafted with maleic anhydride using benzoyl peroxide as initiator. The making process of PEMT was clearly shown in reference 8 . The films .
