Iceland is a democracy with literacy rates (99 percent of the population) and life expectancies (76 years for men and 81 years for women) among the highest in the world. Iceland’s most recent legislative election was held in May 2007 164 COMPARATIVE POLITICS I 165 and five parties won seats in the country’s unicameral national parliament.1 As this example illustrates, the range of potential differences .
