| 7 Pond Problems and Solutions Applying Lake Management Techniques to Ponds Ponds have many of the same attributes as lakes. This 8-acre pond in Minnesota offers swimming and fishing opportunities to area residents. However there is one big difference It is easier and cheaper to influence an entire pond than a lake. That s History. Ponds have been scenic landscape features for centuries. From MacMillan 1899. That s History. The first written account of pond management was in 475 B.C. by Fan Lai a Chinese fish farmer. Chakroff 1978 7.1 INTRODUCTION Lakes and ponds have much in common. They both support the incredibly interesting world of aquatic life as well as the frustrating conditions produced from excessive nutrients algae plants and roughfish see Table 7.1 . Both lakes and ponds have the same components in their food webs and they react to nutrient inputs in similar ways. The same management methods used on big water bodies can be used on small water bodies. Classifying a water body as a pond or a lake is a matter of opinion. Some people base the criteria on size saying that a pond is 10 acres or less. Others base it on depth maintaining that it is a pond if plants grow over the entire bottom. Still others make the distinction based on recreation. If you can water ski on it some contend it is a lake. Thus the definition is flexible but ponds are perceived to be smaller than lakes. 2003 CRC Press LLC TABLE 7.1 Comparison of Lakes to Natural Ponds and Stormwater Ponds Natural Lake Natural Pond Stormwater Pond Purpose Multi-purpose Multi-purpose Flood control and sediment and nutrient removal protects down stream water resources Watershed area to lake surface area Less than 10 1 for groundwater lakes greater than 10 1 for drainage lakes Often less than 10 to 1 Greater than 20 to 1 Land use Depends on lake setting urban or rural Woods and meadows Residential Residential commercial Woods and meadows Source of water Rainfall stream flows runoff groundwater Rainfall .
