In examining the relationship between sustainab development and human opportunities, a broad view the livelihoods concept is taken. Livelihoods ar considered to extend from those in which people a wholly dependent on natural resource systems, fo subsistence, to those based entirely on wage earning o trade. The chapter begins by discussing the main huma drivers of environmental change and considers ho these impact on human well-being and development. looks specifically at demographic change; social chang including gender and the division of labour, healt education, knowledge and information, and povert economic change including production an consumption patterns; and technological change.
