Chapter 4 How to Use Evidence At this point you should have a topic question and a thesis statement. The next thing you need is evidence to convince your reader that your judgment is sound. You should be gathering information or evidence from the moment you begin exploring your topic. Without it you can neither write a topic question nor develop a thesis statement. Why do you include it in your essay You include it to show your reader at least some of the information that you used to form an opinion about your topic. When readers are allowed to view your research and to follow your logical chain of reasoning they are far less likely to challenge your essay. Evidence comes in a variety of shapes and sizes from direct quotes to authoritative facts from illustrations to graphs and statistics. As you might already know all facts are not equal. Some readers are more convinced by scientific evidence such as statistics than by anecdotal evidence despite the fact that stories often illustrate key points in ways that numbers cannot. You have to choose the most effective type of evidence. Do not manipulate your evidence to make it support your thesis. If the evidence does not support your thesis then you must change your thesis to accommodate your evidence I. What Is Evidence A.
