Unless you were handling government or military data, there were few legal requirements. This is rapidly changing. A variety of laws have been passed to enforce the privacy and accuracy of data. Along with these laws, there is a requirement to audit the security measures that are in place. Legal: Each of the laws listed here has some specific requirements. This list is representative of many other laws that are being passed worldwide. Of course, security laws vary from place to place. Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) requires that public companies strengthen and document internal controls to prevent individuals from committing fraudulent acts that may compromise an organization’s financial position or the accuracy of its financial statements.
