HCM Email lthungts@yahoo. com. vn mocquyts@yahoo. com. vn ABSTRACT The study was carried on 97 white leg shrimp farmers in Central and South Viet Nam in 2010. Result shows that shrimp farmers in Central VN have much experience in shrimp farming. They usually used small ponds 2000-3000 m2 for farming at very high density of 100-200 shrimp m2. Shrimp are often harvested in 80-100 days or shorter than 80 days with the size of 12-15g and feed conversion rate FCR varied in . In contrast shrimp farmers in South Vietnam who have much experience of farming the black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon used large ponds to culture the white leg shrimp. Moreover they stocked at lower density less than 100 shrimp m2. As a result they often harvested at around 100 days at the size of 12-15g. Additionally FCRs was 1 0-1 0 lower than those in Central VN. Shrimp productivity was less than 10 tones ha in South Vietnam compared to 12-15 tons ha in Central Vietnam. Farmers in both regions completely used commercial pellet feed containing high protein levels ranging 36 -44 crude proteins depending on shrimp size. The total production cost of shrimp farming was 1 026 000 000 VND ha in Central Vietnam higher than 546 000 000 VND ha in South of Vietnam. The net return for farmers in Central Vietnam was 417 000 000 VND ha in South VN compared to 233 000 000 VND ha in Central VN. Finally the benefit-cost ratios were and in Central and South Viet Nam respectively. That shows white leg farming in Central Viet Nam was more intensive but less profitable than farming in South Viet Nam.
