Eugenol is a natural product largely used in many fields. A new application of the product as metal corrosion inhibitors has been studied. Some eugenol derivatives have been synthesized and then tested on the corrosion inhibition in alkaline solution with presence of NaCl 5% using potentiostatic technique. The inhibition efficiency of the derivatives arrived nearly 90 . I - INTRODUCTION Corrosion has destroyed million tons of metals and has damaged billion dollars to many countries. So finding methods of corrosion protection is always attractive. In all methods of metal protection corrosion inhibition has attracted a lot of attention of researchers. Only very small amount of inhibitor could remarkably reduce corrosion rate. Preeminence of the method is a high effect and easy to be processed 1 2 . Many organic compounds have remarkable inhibition in different severe medium 3 - 6 . Beside of compounds original from petroleum derivatives synthesized from natural products are very attractive because of environmental reasons. Eugenol is the most important compound in Vietnamese Huongnhu essential oil clove oil which is valuable and large applicable due to their activities. Their derivatives are intensively studied 7 - 10 . Structures of the synthetic compounds were usually confirmed by iR ms 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectra 11 12 . The application of the eugenol derivatives is very large mostly in pharmacy and parapharmacy. A new application of eugenol derivatives as corrosion inhibitors has been studied. Some of the derivatives manifest a good ability inhibiting metal corrosion not only in acidic solution but also in alkaline and neutral .
