The . newspaper industry is suffering through what could be its worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. Advertising revenues have plummeted due in part to the severe economic downturn, while readership habits have changed as consumers turn to the Internet for free news and information. Some major newspaper chains are burdened by heavy debt loads. Between 2008 and early 2010, eight major newspaper chains declared bankruptcy, several big city papers shut down, and many laid off reporters and editors, imposed pay reductions, cut the size of the physical newspaper, or turned to Web-only publication. The Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance which promotes development of new technologies for the forest products industry as a special project of the American Forest Paper Association partnered with Georgia Tech s Institute of Paper Science and Technology IPST to conduct workshops that led to the development of the roadmap documented in this report. The support and contributions from IPST in this effort were noteworthy and essential to achieving a robust roadmap. The 2010 roadmap was developed under the guidance of Ron Brown Executive Director of the Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance and with the financial support of Agenda 2020 and the .
