Significant declines in alcohol-related motor vehicle deaths and injuries ranging from 25-50 have been achieved in many countries around the declines have occurred as a result of two important changes. First there has been a dramatic shift in public attitudes from complacency and apathy to a situation where drinking and driving is considered by most to be socially unacceptable and reprehensible. Alcohol-impaired driving has become a priority concern and this evolution in perspective has been both encouraged and reinforced through the development of national initiatives in many countries to raise public awareness and political support to address impaired driving. This progress has been paralleled by the identification and implementation of proven prevention measures to reduce alcohol-impaired driving. Countries have focused on research initiatives that identify effective policies and legislation to deter drinking and driving. At the same time they
