The 1990 s saw an upsurge of several worldwide efforts to achieve this goal. Examples of this are the Innocenti Declaration on Breastfeeding 1990 the World Summit for Children 1990 The Earth Summit 1992 the International Conference on Nutrition 1992 and the International Conference on Population and Development 1994 . All agreed on the need to create the right environment for women to breastfeed their children. The Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding The global strategy for infant and young child feeding describes essential actions to protect promote and support appropriate infant and young child feeding. It focuses on the importance of investing in this crucial area to ensure that children grow to their full potential free from the adverse consequences of compromised nutritional status and preventable illnesses. It builds on existing approaches and provides a framework of linking synergistically the contributions of multiple programme areas including nutrition child health and development and maternal and reproductive health. The aim of the strategy is to improve through optimal feeding the nutritional status health growth and development and thus the survival of infants and young children. The objectives of the strategy are To raise awareness of the main problems facing IYCF identify approaches to their solution and provide a framework for essential interventions. To create an environment that will enable mothers families and other caregivers in all circumstances to make and implement informed choices about optimal feeding practices for infants and young children National infant Feeding Steering Committee NIFSC to increase commitment
