The ancient Mayans played a game in which a ball was thrown through a basket with a vertical-facing hoop attached to a wall. In the winter of 1891 Naismith was approached by the head of the YMCA s physical training staff who had concluded that the drop in attendance at his clubs was the result of the dearth of competitive sports in winter.
