• Limitations on “AS IS” sales of used cars: Low-income consumers need a reliable car for transportation. Unfortunately, consumers are often sold vehicles with known defects that are hidden from the purchaser. While most states have lemon laws that protect the purchaser of a new car, few states have effective used car warranty laws. In most states dealers will commonly sell used cars “AS IS” in order to disclaim the implied warranties that otherwise apply. Some states have used car lemon laws or limit disclaimer of warranties in used car transactions.
