Several proposals in the field of embedded systems have been introduced by different universities and industries to support SDR applications. This article presents an overview of current platforms and analyzes the related architectural choices the current issues in SDR as well as potential future trends. The purpose of SDR is to enable a programmable solution based on Digital Signal Processing DSP software running on a set of programmable processors and accelerators. With the ever increasing user demands and resource consuming applications particularly in Telecom Industry pressure has been built up for developing not only new standards for communication but new architectures as well. The importance of wireless communication systems can be seen easily by the rapid increase in the number of its subscribers. It is not limited to cellular mobile communication like GSM WCDMA HSDPA or 3GPP LTE but it also includes other wireless standards such as WiMAX Wireless LAN DVB-H and DVB-T.
