There is a broad consensus about the optimal design features of buildings for people with dementia but the external environment has been neglected until recently. The research on which this book is based was a brave and rare attempt to fill this gap. This makes this book unique and especially important. People with dementia, and others with cognitive impairment, are constantly unnecessarily disabled by incomprehensible environments. We should do all we can to help them remain independent by giving due thought and attention to them. We do it for people with visual and hearing impairment and for those with mobility problems.
