These studies included epidemiologic surveys assessments of the pathogenesis of the syndrome analyses of prognostic variables in affected patients and new therapeutic modalities. National rates of sepsis In an attempt to determine country-specific rates of sepsis three studies estimated the incidence of sepsis in the Netherlands 1 in Norway 2 and in Brazil 3 . van Gestel and colleagues 1 performed a cross-sectional survey of patients in 47 Dutch intensive care units ICUs using American College of Chest Physicians Society of Critical Care Medicine consensus criteria for sepsis severe sepsis or septic shock 4 . The authors estimated an incidence of severe sepsis of cases 1000 population per year indicating that severe sepsis accounts for of all hospital admissions and for 11 of all ICU admissions in the Netherlands.
