Population censuses have been carried out in Nepal since 1911. However, the 1952/54 Census was the first one to provide detailed information about the size and structure of the population. Table provides a summary of the basic demographic indicators based on data from the 1971, 1981, 1991 and 2001 Population Censuses. The total population of the country in 1971 was estimated at million and this doubled to million in 2001, thirty years later. There has been a steady increase in the population.
