Abstract Rheumatoid arthritis RA is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by destruction of bone and cartilage which is mediated in part by synovial fibroblasts. Matrix metalloproteinases MMPs are a large family of proteolytic enzymes responsible for matrix degradation.
