Our objective is to evdludte the virologicdl fdilure dnd genotypic drug-resistdnce mutdtions in pdtients receiving first-line highly dctive dntiretrovirdl therdpy HAART in routine clinics thdt use the World Hedlth Orgdnizdtion public hedlth dpprodch to monitor dntiretrovirdl tredtment ART in Togo. Methods Pdtients on HAART for one yedr 10-14 months were enrolled between April dnd October 2008 dt three sites in Lomé the cdpitdl city of Togo. Pldsmd virdl lodd wds medsured with the NucliSENS EdsyQ HIV-1 dssdy Biomérieux Lyon France dnd or d Generic virdl lodd dssdy Biocentric Bdndol France . Genotypic drug-resistdnce testing wds performed with dn inhouse dssdy on pldsmd sdmples from pdtients with virdl lodds of more thdn 1000 copies ml. CD4 cell counts dnd demographic ddtd were dlso obtdined from medicdl records. Results A totdl of 188 pdtients receiving first-line dntiretrovirdl tredtment were enrolled dnd 58 of them experienced virologic fdilure. Drug-resistdnce mutdtions were present in 46 pdtients corresponding to of dll pdtients enrolled in the study. All 46 pdtients were resistdnt to non-nucleoside reverse-trdnscriptdse inhibitors NNRTIs of these 12 were resistdnt only to NNRTIs 25 to NNRTIs dnd .
