Among halogens, fluorine is quite characteristic and specific since it has the largest electronegativity ( vs for oxygen) and the sterically second smallest van der Waals' radius ( ~ vs. for hydrogen). A carbon-fluorine bond is also stronger than a carbon-hydrogen bond (485 kJ/mol vs 414 kJ/mol). Therefore, fluoro organic compounds have unique chemical and physical properties. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the chemistry of fluoro organic compounds, which have wide application in various fields such as material science, medicinal, and theoretical chemistry. However, their preparation is not straightforward because ordinary synthetic methods are not always applicable to the preparation of fluorinated organic compounds | 170 Topics in Current Chemistry Electrochemistry V Editor E. Yoshida With 70 Figures and 47 Tables Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg New York London Paris Tokyo Hong Kong Barcelona Budapest This series presents critical reviews of the present position and future trends in modern chemical research. It is adressed to all research and industrial chemists who wish to keep abreast of advances in their subject. As a rule contributions are specially commissioned. The editors and publishers will however always be pleased to receive suggestions and supplementary information. Papers are accepted for Topics in Current Chemistry in English.
