The primitive methods used for unsafe abortion show the desperation of the women. Surveys done in New York City before the legalisation of abortion on request documented the techniques in common use. 30 Of 899 women interviewed, 74 reported having attempted to abort one or more pregnancies; 338 noted that one of their friends, relatives, or acquaintances had done so. Of those reported abortion attempts, 80% tried to do the abortion themselves. Nearly 40% of women used a combination of approaches. In general, the more invasive the technique, the more dangerous it was to the woman and the more likely it. | Uniting the Globe t in the Fight Against Gynecologic Cano INTERNATIONAL GYNECOLOGIC CANCER SOCIETY From the Past President As our Society reached its 25th anniversary it was my privilege and honor to serve as your twelfth President. Our Society has made enormous progress since its inception and I enjoyed my decade on the IGCS Council. We can all be pleased with the Jonathan s. Berek accomplishments of our IGCS. We serve a md MMS valuable and distinguished role in many parts of the world. Our membership and sphere of influence is rising. Our ability to educate and promote issues for the betterment of women and their families who are afflicted with gynecologic cancers is substantial and growing. I extend my gratitude to all of you who have made and continue to make contributions of time and energy to the many activities of our society. In my presidential address I summarized our past and present status and focused on a proposal for our future. You may read the full text entitled Strategies and Goals The Future of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society in the December 2010 issue of our International Journal of Gynecological Cancer. At the IGCS website you may view a webcast of my address as well as those of many of the presenters from our 13th Biennial Meeting. In my speech I outline the beneficial and productive activities to which the IGCS is committed and the successes that our organization achieved. The 13th Biennial IGCS meeting in Prague October 2010 was particularly successful a meeting that was attended by nearly 3000 people from 103 countries. Many attendees felt that this was the best IGCS meeting to date both scientifically and socially. The meeting was carefully managed and our society should enjoy a reasonable financial balance to underwrite and sustain the many important IGCS educational and outreach activities. I am grateful to all those who assisted me in the meeting preparations and process especially our capable administrator Erica Riley my .
