Although the policies and practices of the Board of Registration in Medicine are established by the Board, and its autonomy was mandated by the legislature, historically the agency had come under the umbrella of the state’s Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation for administrative purposes. In 2003 a statutory change placed the agency’s administrative residence under the umbrella of the Department of Public Health, but with the same level of autonomy as it had always been afforded. As expected, the transition has been smooth and harmonious, given the two agencies’ shared mission of protecting the public. . | An investigation into the configuration and commissioning of treatment services to support those who develop problems with prescription-only or over-the-counter medicine ADDICTION TO MEDICINE NHS National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse NTA 2011 Addiction to medicine an investigation into the configuration and commissioning of treatment services to support those who develop problems with prescription-only or over-the-counter medicine Contents Executive summary 3 A note on terminology 5 Introduction 6 What national data can tell us - national prescription data 7 What national data can tell us - national treatment data 10 An overview of the local response to problem POM OTC medicines use - national picture 17 A review of local practice - partnership site visits 19 A review of local provision - information from specialist dedicated service providers 23 Conclusion 27 Bibliography 29 Glossary 29 Annex 1 30 Annex 2 32 The National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse 6th Floor Skipton House 80 London Road London SE1 6LH T 020 7972 1999 F 020 7972 1997 E W May 2011 2 NTA 2010 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY This report has been commissioned from the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse NTA by the Department of Health and covers England only.
