Every two years, the WHO convenes an Expert Committee on Selection and Use of Essential Medicines to review state- of-the-art evidence on the efficacy, safety, and cost effectiveness of medicines in order to update the WHO Model Lists of Essential Medicines (WHO EML) for adults and children. Countries are encouraged to use this model list to inform the development of their own national EMLs. In the 17th edition of the WHO EML, oxytocin, misoprostol, and magnesium sulfate are included. 16 Oxytocin is included for prevention and treatment of postpartum hemorrhage.
