Last year reinforced the slowing growth trends of the last decade and when adjusted for economic and population growth spending grew by less than 1 percent. The volume of medicines consumed also grew at very low volumes and even declined in the case of injectables and infusables. A number of factors contributed to this comparatively and historically low growth including fewer patient visits to doctors offices patent expiries for branded products expanded usage of existing generic products and less spending on new products.
