Environment The Star Mountains region is one of the wettest places on earth receiving around 40 feet ft 12 m of rain annually. The open-pit operation is located at an elevation of approximately 5 000 ft 1 500 m in the headwaters of the Ok Tedi Ok means river in the local language a tributary of the Fly River. For most of its 105-mile 170-km length the Ok Tedi is typified as a steep braided river. Approximately 30 miles 50 km upstream of its confluence with the Fly River the riverbed gradient reduces dramatically the bed sediments change from predominantly gravel to sand and the form of the river changes to an incised 137 138 Project Selection Mining Papua New Guinea meandering single channel within a large floodplain. From the confluence the Fly River meanders a further 500 miles 800 km before disgorging into the Gulf of Papua. With an average water discharge of approximately 210 000 cubic feet per second ft3 s 6 000 m3 sec the Fly River is one of the world s largest rivers comparable to the Yukon and Columbia rivers in North America 250 000 ft3 s and 235 000 ft3 s respectively and the Danube in Europe 230 000 ft3 s . It also carries a considerable natural sediment load discharging .
