The association was founded in 1916 and standards for business administration were first set in 1919. In 1980 AACSB adopted additional standards for undergraduate and graduate degree programs in accountancy to address special needs of the profession. The association regularly reviews accreditation standards for opportunities to improve their relevance and currency. A collegiate institution offering degrees in business administration or accounting may volunteer for AACSB accreditation review. As a first step the institution applies for a decision on its eligibility for accreditation. The initial accreditation process includes a self-evaluation as well as a peer review. Having achieved AACSB accreditation an institution enters into a program of periodic reviews of strategic improvement progress to maintain its accreditation.
