Trẻ em thiếu protein-năng lượng Ngoài ra báo cáo hình thức nghèo | 78 CHILDREN WHO FAIL TO THRIVE FEEDING BEHAVIOURS AND CHILD CHARACTERISTICS Poorer cognitive function and school grades behavioural differences neurological soft signs and poor motor performance have all been reported in children who are protein-energy malnourished Grantham-McGregor et al. 2000 . Children who are protein-energy deficient also reportedly form poor relationships and have poorer attention spans Grantham-McGregor 1995 . Children who have been placed into more prosperous homes have been shown to improve greatly in their development demonstrating that the subsequent quality of the child s environment can mediate the long-term effects of this type of malnourishment Winick 1976 Colombo et al. 1992 . Behaviours that are associated with malnourishment include fist-clenching and apathy towards the care-giver however failure-to-thrive children can exhibit additional abnormal behaviours that are not solely attributable to malnourishment. If an infant has suffered nutritional deficits while still in the womb it is important for that infant to be able to obtain the required nutrition through feeding Steward 2001 . However the necessary feeding behaviours must be present for this to occur if they are not then this will interfere with normal growth and development. Negative behaviours that can militate against sufficient calorific intake include refusing or rejecting the nipple spitting up not sucking drowsiness and or jerky movements. In fact the more negative behaviour displayed the fewer calories per kilogram are ingested Steward 2001 . It is possible that these difficult feeding behaviours are so subtle that they go unrecognised by the mother and there is the danger that the infant s behaviour will be misinterpreted as lack of hunger or lack of interest. The child is then at greater risk of developing failure-to-thrive problems. Infantile anorexia is characterised by food refusal and failure to thrive and was originally termed separation disorder.
