tailieunhanh - Niche Modeling: Predictions From Statistical Distributions - Chapter 5
| Chapter 5 Environmental data collections Previous chapters highlighted the analysis of data in particular the possibility of a potentially infinite number of environmental variables. Here we consider some of the large number of datasets that might be used to develop niche models and the use of archives to manage them. In the past a small number of specially prepared primarily climatic variables such as annual average temperature and rainfall comprised the variables in a niche model. This approach is sub-optimal for a number of reasons ignores a large number of potentially relevant variables potential for errors in individual preparation of data duplication of effort and data are vulnerable to corruption and loss. Niche models in the future could be prepared much more efficiently from large numbers of data sets acquired from well maintained databases called data archives. The aim of a data archive is to consistently provide these environmental correlates from a massive archive of data through efficient interaction with modeling systems. Niche models developed using such archives have many advantages including access to greater numbers of variables consistent verifiable quality studies replicable by others faster cheaper model development and safe backup. 65 2007 by Taylor and Francis Group LLC 66 Niche Modeling Datasets Niche modelers typically restrict models to few variables mainly related to temperature and rainfall. Although these variables do appear important to most species this approach ignores many potential variables that could be relevant if not better predictors of the distribution of the species. The following lists some of the major resources for ecological niche modeling. The main purpose of listing these files is not to be comprehensive but to illustrate how many variables could regarded as potentially ecologically relevant to a species. Examples of possible correlates include monthly temperatures and rainfall functions of these variables such as
