tailieunhanh - ENVIRONMENTAL POLITICS CASEBOOK: Genetically Modified Foods - Section 4

| Section IV Science Documents 2002 by CRC Press LLC 138 Environmental Politics Casebook Genetically Modified Foods One of the more important scientific studies on the genetically modified food issue at least politically important was conducted by the National Academy of Sciences. The study is of course too long to reproduce here and almost surely too technical for all but other scientists to understand and evaluate. But the press release summarizing its findings and the opening statement at the news conference announcing its release are reprinted here. These documents are in most ways more significant than the study itself for they are what was reported in the press and hence what the public was led to understand as the definitive scientific truth. In sum the report found no evidence that transgenic plants were unsafe to eat or that they posed any particular risks to health or the environment. That was the scientific judgment. But it did recommend that the base of research upon which public policy has to be made be bolstered and that better coordination between the regulatory agencies responsible for overseeing food safety be strengthened. In his opening statement to the news conference at which the results were released Perry Adkisson Chair of the Committee conducting the study conceded that public concern was one of the factors motivating the study that the study group s composition was balanced that the researchers looked more closely at potential risks than benefits and that the product not the process by which it was produced was and should remain the focal point of study. Organizations of scientists themselves differ on questions of safety. The American Council on Science and Health for example has consistently argued that honest science would allay any fears while the Union of Concerned Scientist an opponent of genetically modified foods finds reason for concern in an experiment at Cornell that found potential threats to monarch butterflies from a pesticide .
