Refer to an occupational therapist and physiotherapist for further advice. 46 Oversensitivity 1 Smell touch and taste Children who are oversensitive to their environment are deluged with sensory information which they cannot filter out. Sensations are unavoidable and may come as a shock to the child sometimes being experienced as pain from which naturally the child wants to be free. These children seem to be in a continual state of fight or flight and are extremely anxious as a result. Adult autistics say that the degree of pain and discomfort is made worse by anxiety. Some children seem obsessed by smell and experience strong likes and dislikes to the point of aversion. This can be a distraction in school because they can t help their response. Some children will not go to the toilet in school because of the smell and experience discomfort not conducive to learning. They may not like the smell of swimming baths. They may also make comments about people and their smell if it offends them - sometimes they like body smells and may follow other children about sniffing their ears or the teacher s foot at carpet time. These children are likely to be tactile defensive or oversensitive to touch. They may like labels on clothes cut off. They often kick off their shoes or even take off clothes. Their overreaction to tactile experiences means they may not be comfortable on the carpet at carpet time. They may hate new experiences and want to avoid clay glue or dough because they don t like sticky fingers. They may also lash out when touched by other children and have a low tolerance to pain and minor injuries. Oversensitive children usually have very limited tastes they may not eat a balanced diet and are often underweight. Their parents may need to give them .
