Formulas and Linear Equations An equation is a statement that two mathematical expressions are equal. In the equation 3x 4 19 the 3 4 and 19 are called constants the letter x the variable. When solving an equation we try to find the numerical value or values of the variable that makes the equality true. In 3x 4 19 the value x 5 is the root or solution of the equation.
