| Ministry of Agriculture Rural Development Australian Government AusAID Project 032 05 VIE Sustainable and profitable development of acacia plantations for sawlog production in Vietnam Project Milestone Report MS13 Draft of International Research paper on 30month results from thinning pruning trial April 2009 1 Preface This report addresses one component of Project Milestone 13 Research Publications Technical Reports Draft of International Research Paper on 30-month results from thinning pruning trial. We have collected all the data required for the paper from the Project thinning response trial established at Dong Hoi Quang Binh province. Establishment of this trial was reported in Project Milestone No. 8 We consider it appropriate that the International Research Paper has as its first author Mr Dang Thinh Trieu the FSIV Project Scientist who installed the thinning treatments in the trial and has led the subsequent data collection at six-monthly intervals. It was not possible for Mr Trieu to complete a draft of the full scientific paper by the end of the CARD project because he is currently completing his PhD thesis. It will be feasible for Mr Trieu to complete the first draft of the full paper by July 2009. It is intended that the paper will be submitted to the international journal Forest Ecology and Management. Meanwhile to address the reporting requirements of Project Milestone we have prepared the following brief summary of the Dong Hoi trial and the results obtained from it. Summary of trial objectives and design The main objective of the Dong Hoi thinning response trial was to quantify the effect of different levels of thinning on height and diameter growth of Acacia hybrid. Differences in basal area1 increment growth and individual tree diameter growth between treatments will be used to evaluate how to use thinning to maximise both wood volume basal area and wood value tree size . Trial establishment was reported in Project Milestone 8. The thinning trial .
