| Ministry of Agriculture Rural Development AusAID J Australian Government Collaboration for Agriculture Rural Development Milestone Report Project VIE 032 05 Sustainable and profitable development of acacia plantations for sawlog production in Vietnam MS14 Progress Report after 2 years of changes made by growers in target areas in relation to baseline data Introduction This brief report addresses one of the deliverables of Project Milestone 14 Progress Report after 2 years of changes made by growers in target areas in relation to baseline data. We consider changes in planting material and changes in plantation establishment and management. Planting material As noted in the report for project Milestone 5 Baseline Conditions Established The most widely planted material was and remains the acacia hybrid clones originating from the Reseach Centre for Forest Tree Improvement RCFTI Forest Science Institute of Vietnam. Next most important in these regions was and remains Acacia mangium raised from seeds rather than clonal material. In the two years since May 2007 the acacia hybrid clones have continued to be widely available in central and Northern Vietnam. Three new acacia hybrid clones have been approved for operational planting by MARD. In 2008 under the World Bank project RCFTI provided 70 000 hedge plants of 7 acacia hybrid clones to set up new clonal nurseries for acacia hybrid forestry in Thua Thien Hue Quang Nam Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh provinces. RCFTI s Tree Seed centre has commenced operations and has harvested large quantities of A. mangium seed from RCFTI s seed orchards and seed production areas of this species. A total of over 100 kg of A. mangium seed has been harvested from RCFTI orchards in years 2006-2009. Results of genetic gain trials of A. mangium in central and northern Vietnam Nguyen Duc Kien RCFTI unpublished show that seed from these orchards results in plantations with significantly at least 10 faster growth rate than previously used commercial .
