Allium albopilosum Large globes of eighty or more one-inch flowers in bright red-violet with yellow-green centers. The two colors are exact complements in hue value and intensity. 134 Many color experts agree with the saying that in terms of combining colors Nature always gets it right meaning that they perceive nature s color combinations to be unfailingly harmonious. In this book I am defining color harmony as color combinations that satisfy the brain s apparent longing for colors that are balanced by their complements as they are in nature and varied in their values and intensities. Throughout the natural world of landscape seascape animals birds and fish we find these balanced color combinations. Light and bright colors are blended with analogous colors and contrasted by complementary colors and these bright hues are nearly always embedded in a context of abundant restful low-intensity hues. Color by Betty Edwards Color Harmony in Flowers In your work so far with color you have experienced the aesthetic satisfaction that results from balancing hues and you have seen how light falling on colors adds to the rich variations in value and intensity that are so pleasing. With your new understanding of color you will find yourself recognizing satisfying color everywhere in nature perhaps most vividly in flowers where complementary colors and varied attributes are clearly evident able to be appreciated at close range. In any flower shop you can observe nature s genius with color. You will see violet markings on yellow flowers red-violet flowers with yellow-green leaves dull red-orange flowers with dull blue-green leaves. On a single flower petal you will see color values that range from pure white to the brightest red perhaps echoed and contrasted by variegated green-and-white leaves. You will see intensity variations from bright orange at the tips of petals dulled to nearly black-brown at the flower s center.
