Surely every child has asked Why is the sky blue To answer that question and countless others about color scientists have developed a body of knowledge known as color theory. Color theory is the study of rules ideas and principles that apply to color as a general topic somewhat apart from the artist s actual practice of working with colored pigments. In this book my central purpose is to teach you how to see and mix colors to match perceived hues and how to combine colors to create harmonious arrangements. To this end some background information about modern and traditional color theory is useful since we will be drawing on centuries of artists practical knowledge of working with pigments knowledge that artists themselves derived from color theory. 14 Color by Betty Edwards Theories about Color In the Western world theories about color have a clear history of development beginning with the ancient Greeks who thought that colors arose from the struggle between light and darkness. Aristotle considered red to be midway along a continuum from white to black with the other hues arranged accordingly yellow nearer to white and blue nearer to black. He thus conceived a linear ordering of colors based on the paleness or darkness of pure hues a theory of color ordering that persisted for over two thousand years from the sixth century . to the seventeenth century . Then in the late 1600s Sir Isaac Newton used a glass prism to divide white rays of sunlight into the fanned colored wavelengths which he named the spectrum derived from a Latin word meaning apparition Figure 2-1 .
