There are two parts, with one task of approximately 250 words in each. In Part I, the task is compulsory and candidates have to read and respond to written information by producing one, or sometimes two pieces of writing, . a letter and a note. In Part 2, candidates have to write one piece from a choice of four topics. One topic is usually work-related. | Paper 5 Speaking The interview is in pairs and there are two examiners. One examiner the interlocutor works with you explaining the tasks while the other the assessor generally sits apart assessing your English. The interview is in four parts which each test different speaking skills. The examiners may arrange the chairs in different ways at different phases of the interview. Part I In this part there will be a relaxed conversation round a table where you and your partner meet the two examiners and answer general questions about yourselves. During this part your general social English and your ability to interact with other people in English will be assessed. Be prepared to introduce yourself and say where you come from. introduce your partner if you know them and say something about them. See page 176. talk about your family in a general way. See page 176. talk about how long you have been studying English and why. See page 15. talk about your job or course of study and your future plans. See page 15. talk about your interests and hobbies. See page 176. You may also have to ask your partner questions in the same areas. Part 2 In this part you and your partner sit facing each other and you will take it in turns to speak for a minute or so about a visual prompt - a photograph cartoon or set of pictures. When you have finished your partner responds briefly - by saying what s similar or different about their own visual for example. This part tests your ability to give information clearly. See pages 42 and 190. EXAM OVERVIEW Part 3 In this part you and your partner will have a problemsolving task to discuss for about two minutes. You might have to put points in order of importance give advice or come to a decision. This part tests your ability to negotiate and collaborate with your partner. It does not test your ability to find the correct solution. If you can t agree on a solution ft will be perfectly acceptable it you agree to disagree . See pages 46 and 202. Part 4
