As technology becomes even more ingrained into the fabric of the organizations in which we work using the Internet and web-based tools to facilitate productive group processes manage change and foster learning will become a necessary and natural part of being an effective practitioner. We are at the cusp of a new era in OD. The promise of technology is immense. In the years to come the effective and transformational use of technology in OD will likely become a discipline in its own right rather than a special topic on the edge of the field. This chapter provides a framework for understanding the potential role of technology in organization development. Technology is defined here as any software tool or Internet-based application that allows for communication collaboration and other processes that support OD interventions. A number of case studies and examples illustrate approaches for integrating technology into OD. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the future of technology and OD a future in which technology does not have to be described as a special tool or optional add-on but rather as a natural part of the change process itself.
