Value-Added Modules VAMs equipped with optical splitters can cost-effectively distribute signals to multiple subscribers. The modules provide operators with unmatched flexibility and functionality. Splitting Up is Easy to Do A VAM splitter module allows service providers to transport a signal from the serving office to the far-end of the network over one fiber before splitting the signal to feed multiple subscribers. The signal travels from the headend to a node site where it is split multiple times via a predetermined split ratio. The subsequent signals are then sent downstream to subscribers. See Figure 1. Monitoring Your Investment Splitter modules are also used as nonintrusive monitoring and testing devices. A VAM splitter module includes separate ports for local testing. When providers split a signal 90 to 95 percent of the signal is allowed to proceed to its destination and the remaining portion is sent to the local access port to be monitored or tested by an external test device. VAM splitter modules offer providers a wide range of split ratios to accommodate specific application requirements. The ability to easily monitor both directions from both ends of a fiber span greatly reduces the time necessary to locate failures or degradation points. Modules include most industry standard singlemode and multimode connectors and module inputs and outputs are made via adapter pigtail or bare fiber depending on requirements. See Figure 2.
