These two types of questions are asked only about the lectures and academic discussions not about conversations. A Ordering Questions Ordering questions require you to put four sometimes three events or steps in a process into the correct order. Anytime a speaker presents events in chronological order the order in which they occurred a biography of a person the steps of a process or a ranking of things according to their importance there will probably be an ordering question. Listen for time words years dates and words that signal a sequence. Common Sequence Words before that afterwards first earlier than next second previously after that third prior to later fourth sooner than subsequent following that As you take notes use numbers to keep track of the order of events or steps in the sequence. You can circle these numbers to make them easier to find. Remember The order in which the speaker mentions events or steps is not necessarily the order in which they happened. To answer ordering questions on the computer first click on one of the four words phrases or sentences in the top half of the screen and then drag and drop it into the appropriate box labeled 1 2 3 and 4 in the lower half of the screen. The expression from the top will then appear in the box that you dropped it into. Do this for all four boxes. If you change your mind click on the answer that you wish to change and your original choice will disappear from the box. You need to figure out the correct positions for only three answers because the fourth answer must go in the remaining blank. Sample Item 1 Here is a section of a presentation from the Listening Preview Test and an ordering question about it. Sample notes on this section of the lecture are also provided.
