This is the task of operations planning and control the objective of which is to ensure that the operation runs effectively and produces products and services as it should do. It is concerned with the timing quantity quality and choice of transformed and transforming resources to ensure that the supply of products and services meets customer demand see Figure . Planning and control involves both managing demand for its products or services from actual or potential customers and match- ing them against its capability to supply them today and in the future. Planning versus control A plan is a statement of intention based on expectations about the future. Planning the future allows an organisation to commit itself to longer-term expenditure which will be required to ensure that it can cope with the future. The plan may need to be reworked or re-planned to deal with known or anticipated changes as the date of implementation nears. When the plan is implemented many things may go wrong and thus control is required to try to cope with whatever changes have occurred.
