Not one book illustrates this fact better than Rabindranath Tagore s book on nationalism together with its dedication. The book claims that nationalism is a great danger because the nation is becoming empty it diverts one s willingness to make sacrifices for one s real moral and live aim and directs it towards a mechanical and lifeless aim. 1 The dedication written in April 1921 by Babette Steininger is more ambiguous. She cited a runic script inscribed in a decorative fastener which has two readings Logapore Wodan Donar help or Marriage must conquer Wodan and should help Donar. 2 The second part of the dedication which is cited at the end of this chapter clearly refers to the relation between racist occultism and Hitler. We shall look into that later. First let us look at the works on the shelves according to the language and nationality of the writers. French Authors Franco-German Relations If we examine the proportion of works of value compared to the proportion of rubbish on the shelves then the result is perhaps unsurprising representing value the greatest number of books are written in French or translated from French. At one end of the scale there are the vehicles of humanitarian ideals such as Gandhi and Romain Rolland while at the other there are works of anti-Semitic literature. Although Gandhi s name does not appear in Mein Kampf 64 Hitler s Library Hitler presumably knew about him and hated him. Thus it is unlikely he would have studied Romain Rolland s Gandhi selection and Gandhi biography 3 books which were fondly suggested to him. At the most extreme end of the scale we find of course Édouard Drumont s anti-Semitic book entitled Jewish France.
