In this paper the process of synthesis glipizide from 5-methylpyrazine-2-carboxylic acid through two steps yield 60 is introduced. Glipzide exists in white crystalline form melting point 208-210 oC. The product characters was determined by modern physical methods such as IR 1D NMR 2D NMR spectra. Keywords Glipizide Sulfonylureas Diabetes. 1. INTRODUCTION Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use insulin. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas which plays a key role in the regulation of blood sugar levels. Hyperglycaemia or raised blood sugar is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and over time leads to serious damage to many of the body s systems especially the nerves and blood vessels 2 . Diabetes is divided into two types type I diabetes about 10 patients and type II diabetes 85-95 patients . Type I diabetes is caused by a severe lack of insulin in the body. When insulin is insufficient blood sugar is not metabolized to the cells of the body so can not produce energy. Type II diabetes occurs when the body doesn t produce enough insulin or impaired ability to use insulin 5 . Sulfonylureas is the class of organic compounds used in medicine and agriculture. They are widlely use in antidiabetic drugs in order to control diabetes mellitus type II. Sulfonylureas are compounds that are capable of reducing blood sugar although some cases are ineffective. Their side effects have been shown to be negligible and disappear when reduce or stop the dose. Sulfonylureas have been proven non-toxic and have been treated millions of patients for decades 7 . Sulfonylureas act by increasing insulin release from the beta cells in the pancreas 9 . The sulfonylureas group developed over three generations including
