POLITENESS STRATEGIES IN EXPRESSING SATISFACTION Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh1 Abstract This cross-cultural study aims to investigate into the positive and negative politeness strategies manifested by Vietnamese and American natives to express satisfaction in different contexts. On conducting the research the author takes informants social parameters such as age sex marital status living area and knowledge of foreign language s into consideration. Informants were asked to complete two forms ofquestionnaire which are the meta-pragmatic questionnaire and data completion task. Semi-structured interviews are also made of to explore the reasons and beliefs of informants when choosing a certain communicative strategy. Ultimately their survey responses are carefully analyzed to build a frame a common set of politeness strategies used by the American and Vietnamese. Similarities and differences in terms of expressing satisfaction with a view to positive and negative politeness are expected to shed light on. The conclusion is drawn from data analysis and findings are presented and compared in a brief and concise way. Some common expressing satisfaction patterns in both Vietnamese and English cultures from the data are also presented and illustrated with the hope of partially helping avoid cultural conflicts or communicating breakdowns.
