Introduction The transfer of knowledge within an organisation across organisations between an individual and an organisation and between individuals is facilitated through a number of sign systems. Such systems include natural languages mathematical equations subject specific notations and other conventions including graphical conventions. The term facilitation is a broad term however the key to facilitation is a common consensus on the meanings of words of natural language kinds of mathematical equations and agreement on notations and conventions. So in some respects the transfer of knowledge requires a consensus amongst organisations and individuals. Much knowledge management literature has focused on the sharing of know-how and expertise through protocols devised by managers Nonaka and Takeuchi 1995 Davenport and Probst 2002 or the focussed discussion of problems related to the sociology of organisations Scarbrough 1996 . Some have even looked at this problem from a cybernetic point of view in terms of feedback and control systems Morgan 1996 .
