To maintain the integrity of relational data, to provide copy right protection, tamper detection, digital watermarking is an efficient solution. Many watermarking techniques for databases are available in the literature. This paper surveys and classifies them based on the way they express the watermark, their verifiability and their granularity. Key Words: database, digital watermarking, integrity of relational data. 1. Introduction The wide range of web services that the internet is offering includes database as a service, online decision support system, digital repositories and libraries, ecommerce etc. These applications make the digital asserts easily accessible by ordinary people for many purposes. As a result such digital asserts are facing many problems like forgery, piracy, illegal redistribution, ownership claiming etc. Digital watermarking has been considered as an effective solution to these problems. Digital Watermarking refers to techniques that are used to protect digital data by imperceptibly hiding authorized mark information into the original data. Initially, most of the watermarking techniques were concentrated on watermarking of still images, video, audio, VLSI design etc [Lee and Jung, 2001], [Potdar et al., 2005], [Abdel-Hamid et al., 2004]. However, in the recent years watermarking of database systems becoming popular because of its increasing utility in many real-life applications like ensuring the integrity and protecting rights of outsourced relational databases in service provider model .
