tailieunhanh - Pollen morphology of the genus Onobrychis (Fabaceae) in Turkey

The pollen size and morphology of 20 Onobrychis Adans. taxa from Turkey were studied using both light and scanning electron microscopy. Of the taxa studied, Onobrychis fallax Freyn & Sint. and Onobrychis elata Boiss. & Balansa showed the smallest size of pollen grains, while the largest were found in Onobrychis aequidentata (Sibth. & Sm.) d’Urv. | Turkish Journal of Botany Turk J Bot (2013) 37: 669-681 © TÜBİTAK doi: Research Article Pollen morphology of the genus Onobrychis (Fabaceae) in Turkey 1, 1 2 3 4 4 Süleyman AVCI *, Cengiz SANCAK , Alp CAN , Aydan ACAR , Nur Münevver PINAR Department of Field Crops, Faculty of Agriculture, Eskişehir Osmangazi University, Eskişehir, Turkey 2 Department of Field Crops, Faculty of Agriculture, Ankara University, Ankara, Turkey 3 Department of Histology and Embryology, Faculty of Medicine, Ankara University, Ankara, Turkey 4 Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Ankara University, Ankara - TURKEY Received: Accepted: Published Online: Printed: Abstract: The pollen size and morphology of 20 Onobrychis Adans. taxa from Turkey were studied using both light and scanning electron microscopy. Of the taxa studied, Onobrychis fallax Freyn & Sint. and Onobrychis elata Boiss. & Balansa showed the smallest size of pollen grains, while the largest were found in Onobrychis aequidentata (Sibth. & Sm.) d’Urv. and Onobrychis viciifolia Scop. The pollens of all taxa studied represent the tricolpate type of pollen and are prolate in shape. The type of exine found in the studied taxa is reticulate (sect. Dendobrychis DC. and sect. Laphobrychis .), suprareticulate (sect. Onobrychis), or microreticulate (sect. Hymenobrychis DC. and sect. Heliobrychis Bunge). A correlation is observed between the pollen size and chromosome number. Key words: Pollen, Onobrychis, Leguminosae, Turkey 1. Introduction Species of Onobrychis Adans. (sainfoin) are economically important plants that are grown to produce high-protein fodder for many animals. They play an important role in the soil environment by increasing the nutritive value of drought-resistant pasture (Abou-El-Enain, 2002; Ghanavati et al., 2012). About 170 species of Onobrychis are distributed around the world. They .
