During 30 years, Vietnamese linguistics has witnessed the integration, acquisition and creative application of theories and trends learnt from modern linguistics to Vietnam. A panorama of Vietnamese prominent fields, authors, and works is sketched out. New approaches, including functional grammar, generative grammar, pragmatics, sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, computational linguistics, and speech-language pathology, have been taken into Vietnamese linguistics. The paper documents the contributions of seminal works to development of the fields, from newly minted approaches such as appraisal framework to traditional topics such as stylistics and general linguistics. General context th The 6 National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam held in December 1986 became a significant landmark in the history of national development. Owing to the Congress, a new era of renovation was initiated, aiming at eliminating completely the subsidy mechanism, promoting all resources for national development, and targeting at international integration. The Congress laid emphasis on important roles of sciences and technology, including also the irreplaceable role of social sciences. As it is highlighted in the 6th Congress resolution, “Sciences and technology are the very dynamic for socio-economic development It is necessary to promote the efficient role of social sciences in carrying out theoretical work of the Party and building the socialist political program in our country for the transitional period ”* For over
