Why Managers Must Get Involved in E-business Edmunds began business in 1966 as a publisher of pricing guides designed to help car shoppers make purchasing choices. The firm operated under this business model for nearly 30 years. A few visionary employees recognized that the Internet represented a tremendous opportunity and created a Web site as an experiment in 1995. Had they not ventured onto the Internet, Edmunds would not be in business today. The Web site soon became one of the most popular Web sites for shoppers looking to compare, price, and locate new and used vehicles. Along the way, Edmunds had to adapt its business model to generate revenue by selling advertising on its Web site to auto manufacturers and makers of auto products, as well as by selling sales leads to auto dealers. Researching a new car using online resources really caught on with potential car buyers. As a result, numerous auto-oriented Web sites sprung up—auto manufacturer sites; industry expert sites such as Consumer Reports; and third-party sites, such as CarGurus, Yahoo! Autos, and Edmunds; which incorporated user-generated Edmunds management recognized that in order to be successful against all of this competition they needed to do more than attract highly motivated one-time visitors.
