tailieunhanh - Lecture TCP-IP protocol suite (3/e): Chapter 6 - Behrouz Forouzan

Chapter 6 - Delivery, forwarding, and routing of IP packets. This chapter describes the delivery and forwarding of IP packets. Delivery refers to the way a packet is handled by the underlying networks under the control of the network layer. Concepts such as direct and indirect delivery are discussed. Forwarding refers to the way a packet is delivered to the next station. We discuss two trends in forwarding: forwarding based on destination address of the packet and forwarding based on the label attached to the packet. | Chapter 6 Upon completion you will be able to: Delivery, Forwarding, and Routing of IP Packets Understand the different types of delivery and the connection Understand forwarding techniques in classful addressing Understand forwarding techniques in classless addressing Understand how a routing table works Understand the structure of a router Objectives TCP/IP Protocol Suite DELIVERY The network layer supervises delivery, the handling of the packets by the underlying physical networks. Two important concepts are the type of connection and direct versus indirect delivery. The topics discussed in this section include: Connection Types Direct Versus Indirect Delivery TCP/IP Protocol Suite IP is a connectionless protocol. Example 1 See Next Slide TCP/IP Protocol Suite Figure Configuration for routing, Example 1 TCP/IP Protocol Suite Solution Figure shows the three tables used by router R1. Note that some entries in the next-hop address column are empty because in these cases, the destination is in the same network to which the router is connected (direct delivery).
